Plot

Rahul Khanna (Shahrukh Khan) and Anjali Sharma (Kajol) are best friends at St. Xavier's college. Anjali is a tomboy, which is the main reason why Rahul is her best friend. Anjali gets increasingly annoyed with Rahul hitting on the other women all the time because, unknown to Rahul and even herself, she is in love with him. The principal, Mr. Malholtra (Anupam Kher) informs Anjali that his daughter Tina (Rani Mukherji) is arriving at St. Xavier's from Oxford University in England. He requests that Anjali takes care of Tina. When Tina arrives, Rahul is instantly attracted to her. One day in class, Rahul says that love is friendship and that he shall only love a girl if she is his best friend. This makes Anjali believe that Rahul loves her. However, Rahul and Tina start spending a lot of time together and find themselves increasingly drawn to each other. Anjali attempts to be like the elegant and feminine Tina but the attempts are only met with laughter from Rahul and his friends. Rifat Bi (Himani Shivpuri), the motherly housekeeper at Xavier's, encourages Anjali to tell Rahul about her feelings for him. When Anjali sets out to do so, she is heartbroken to hear that he is in love with Tina. Anjali decides to leave college without telling Rahul or Tina. When Rahul finds out, he is deeply hurt - he and Anjali share a tearful goodbye. That day, Tina realizes that Rahul and Anjali are soulmates and that she has come between them. Rahul and Tina get married and have a baby girl whom they name Anjali. Tina dies after giving birth - she leaves behind eight letters for her daughter, one for each of her first eight birthdays.
Reading the last letter on her eighth birthday, the younger Anjali (Sana Saeed) learns about her namesake Anjali Sharma. Tina's letter gives her daughter the mission to bring the elder Anjali back to Rahul. It is revealed that Anjali Sharma has changed over these years - she has developed an elegant, feminine personality and is no longer a tomboy. She is engaged to Aman Mehra (Salman Khan) but confides to her mother (Reema Lagoo) that she is mostly marrying him as a compromise. In fact, Anjali believes that she cannot fall in love ever again after losing Rahul. The younger Anjali and Rahul's mother (Farida Jalal), travel to Xavier's and learn that Anjali Sharma is to be married in a week. Little Anjali prays and the wedding is postponed to December. Anjali Sharma is going to be working on a summer camp in Shimla; so Rahuls' mother and the younger Anjali travel there. They find the elder Anjali and little Anjali shares a bond with her. When Anjali Sharma is watching television one night, she sees Rahul participating in a live show where he talks about his daughter. This makes the elder Anjali realize that she has met her old friend's daughter. Rahul arrives at the summer camp and is overjoyed to be reunited with his old friend Anjali after all these years. They feel themselves being drawn towards each other again. One night, they are dancing in the rain when Anjali Sharma sees her engagement ring and feels torn between her fiance and her true love. Coincidentally, Aman reaches the camp that night and informs Rahul that he and Anjali are getting married. Rahul is hurt by this news but expresses his happiness. The elder Anjali believes Rahul is rejecting her again; so she decides to leave with Aman that same day and have the wedding as soon as possible.
Rahul and his family arrive at the elder Anjali's wedding. Rahul goes to visit his old friend one last time - she still loves him and cannot bear to leave him. Aman notices this - he expresses his guilt for coming between the two he now knows to be soulmates. He releases Anjali from their engagement. As Rahul and the elder Anjali marry, little Anjali has a vision of Tina giving her the thumbs up.

Production

Johar first wrote a story, which was a love triangle between a tomboy, a very pretty looking girl and a slightly insensitive boy but he shelved the idea because he was not very satisfied with it. Then he wrote an other plot about a widower and his child. which he shelved as well. Eventually he decided to merge the two stories into one. H explained in an interview with Rediff: "It was about the trauma of a widower and his little child. How the child really wants a mother and how she brings her mother into her father's life. Then I thought: Why not bring an youth aspect to the story? Why not a flashback? That's how the story got made." [4]
Many Indian actresses such as Twinkle Khanna, Tabu, Shilpa Shetty, Urmila Matondkar, Aishwarya Rai, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor were offered the role of Tina, but turned it down. Actor Saif Ali Khan was offered the role of Aman Mehra, but he turned it down.
The entire film was shot in nine and half months with a substantial part of it shot in Mauritius. During the bicycle sequence in the "Yeh Ladki Hai Deewana" song number, Kajol lost control of her bike, fell flat on her face and was knocked unconscious while also injuring her knee. Years later while discussing the incident with co-star Shah Rukh Khan and director Karan Johar on his talk show Koffee with Karan, Khan and Johar joked that Kajol lost her memory upon awakening and was asking where she was and what her name was. During the promotional Making of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai TV special, Kajol stated that the accident was her most memorable part of shooting the film because she doesn't remember it.
